We now have an opportunity for a Senior EC&I Engineer to join the team delivering exceptional solutions to our clients.
What you’ll be doing
JOB PURPOSE:
To be responsible primarily to the Engineering Manager working on projects across the nuclear sector including in new build, existing generation, decommissioning and defence. The role will require good communication skills with both the customer and the AMS engineering and management teams and be responsible for taking ownership of, and sourcing solutions to, any issues that arise in completion of the projects.
Projects range from the specification of a single instrument to complete system specifications and design packages including system build, site installation and commissioning. The Senior EC&I Engineer is responsible for delivering the project and all associated documentation using the resources allocated, including approved sub-contractors where appropriate.
Ideally the candidate would work from our offices in Bridgwater but hybrid working may be available for the right candidates. There may occasionally be the need for overnight stays when conducting on site visits.
MAIN DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Assessment of technical options to achieve the most cost-effective overall solution
- Development of EC&I design philosophy documents including Basis of Design Documents
- Development of EC&I architecture including block diagrams, layout requirements and instrument lists
- Be capable of correct EC&I equipment specification, assessment, and design justifications
- Take account of obsolescence and lifetime issues during architecture and component selection
- Internal document verification to AMS/Customer quality processes and approval of design drawings.
- Single point of contact for customers on specific engineering projects.
- Ensure projects allocated are delivered on time and to budget.
- Communicate with customers, build relationships and develop further opportunities for AMS.
- Communicate effectively with AMS project team ensuring positive working relationships and encourage flow of project information is maintained to ensure accurate knowledge of project status.
- When required, be able to work effectively as part of a team on projects run by others.
- Represent the company at meetings with clients and sub-contractors.
- Complete a wide range of tasks to deliver customers projects, not limited to, but including:
- Preparing tenders/quotations to customer specifications ensuring diligent costing to minimise financial risks.
- Project specifications to ensure clarity of tenders/quotations.
- Verification of front-end engineering design packages.
- Control and management of approved AMS sub contractors to complete project work.
- Through Life Management of projects (cradle to grave).
- Where applicable, to author / verify all associated documentation as required for a project.
- E.g. design substantiation reports, safety case assessment and compliance with company technical standards, system and design assessment reports, system specification, process control and operating philosophies and functional logic diagrams.

Hybrid working / working from home
Hours: 37.5 hours per week
Working pattern: Optional 4- or 5-day working week. Same hours worked per week but spread over either Monday -Thursday or Monday to Friday.
What you’ll need
We are looking for someone with the following:
Essential
- 5 years’ + experience in an EC&I Engineer role
- Have relevant sound technical experience and engineering qualifications (HND minimum)
- Experience of designing EC&I equipment
- Experience of EC&I equipment and its application in conventional and safety applications.
- Knowledge of the full project lifecycle from requirements capture, through design, build & test, to installation and commissioning
- Ability to understand requirements and ensure that the design meets them
- Awareness of health and safety regulations
- Problem solving skills
- Commercial awareness
- Good planning and organisation skills are essential
- Ability to technically author design documents using clear and concise language and grammar
- Have no restrictions to obtain security clearance for government and regulated industries.
- Trained in and able to apply BS7671 IET Wiring Regulations to designs
Desirable
- Degree qualified and Chartered (or working towards)
- Nuclear Industry experience
- Functional safety knowledge (IEC 61508 or IEC 61513)
- Knowledge of PLC programming and system integration, SCADA configuration and software testing.
- Knowledge of standards compliance, certification and equipment layout and segregation issues including EMC
- Project engineering and management experience in a regulated industry
- Knowledge of and application of BS EN IEC 61439 and BS EN 60947.
