Chemical contamination presents an ongoing challenge for nuclear power stations, where changes in water chemistry need to be detected reliably before contaminated process streams can progress into critical plant systems. The difficulty is not simply measuring conductivity; it is developing a protection system that can distinguish genuine chemical ingress from instrument faults and maintenance conditions, provide operators with clear alarm information, and remain dependable and maintainable throughout the station lifecycle. AMS Nuclear designs and develops Chemical Ingress Protection Systems (CIPS) that combine analytical instrumentation, sample conditioning, resilient protection logic and plant interfaces into an integrated EC&I solution.
Across a programme of work for EDF Nuclear Generation spanning more than a decade, AMS Nuclear has designed, manufactured and progressively developed CIPS solutions for multiple UK nuclear power stations. The work has included four-channel conductivity monitoring, 2oo4 voting logic, dedicated wet and logic panels, Central Control Room integration, testing and commissioning support, alongside subsequent modifications and instrumentation modernisation. This long-term involvement has allowed AMS Nuclear to retain proven protection principles while adapting the systems to station-specific requirements and changing technology, providing a practical approach to lifecycle management and obsolescence.
