Project Overview

Client: EDF Energy – Heysham 1

Type: Control & Instrumentation

Scope Of Supply: Site Survey, Installation Assistance

Key Deliverables: Feasibility / Design Report

AMS Nuclear supported EDF Energy in preparing Heysham 1 for the integration of a new fleet-wide Gaseous Activity Monitoring (GAM) system – drawing on extensive site experience and specialist EC&I capability to deliver a verified, QA-compliant design basis that reduced integration risk, enabled safe parallel operation and ensured continued compliance with reactor safety case requirements.

With a proven track record in gaseous monitoring systems at Heysham 1 and strong expertise in electrical and small-bore tubing design, AMS Nuclear provided clarity on system compatibility, defined required modifications and established a robust engineering pathway for implementation. The result was a confident, controlled transition from ageing monitoring infrastructure to a modern system, supporting long-term operational reliability and regulatory assurance from the outset.

Modernising Safety-Critical Monitoring in a Live Nuclear Environment

“The challenge wasn’t just technical integration, it was making sure everything worked together first time, in a live environment where there’s no margin for uncertainty.”
