AMS Nuclear Engineering Ltd (AMS) designs, builds and supplies Control & Instrumentation based systems across the UK’s nuclear industry, whether that be into the nuclear new build, nuclear power generation, decommissioning or defence sectors. Projects vary from small scoping and feasibility studies to the design of complex systems with high integrity safety functions. Our workshop team is responsible for assembling, testing and commissioning these systems to the highest quality.

Build and test the control and instrumentation panels at the heart of the UK’s nuclear projects – and lead the workshop team that delivers them. As a Senior Technician you’ll combine hands-on panel manufacture with supervising and developing technicians and apprentices, all to the highest quality standards. A role for a skilled technician ready to step up and bring others on with them.

What you’ll be doing

Working from drawings to manufacture electrical and process control instrumentation-based panels consisting of the following:

  • Laying out equipment and marking out panels
  • Cutting and drilling with hand & power tools
  • Dressing cut surfaces
  • Fitting mounting rails, junction boxes and instruments into panels
  • Wiring (to 18th Edition Wiring Regulations (BS7671:2022)
  • Small-bore pipe cutting, bending and finishing for assembly with compression fittings
  • Process control instrumentation configuration / calibration

Inspection/checking/testing of panels post-manufacture

  • Point-to-point checks
  • PLC input and output testing
  • Leading / hosting Factory Acceptance Tests

Site work

  • Occasional installation/commissioning work on customer sites around the UK.

Supervision

  • Supervising the team of workshop technicians and apprentices
  • Allocating work and ensuring progress is made at the appropriate rate
  • Coach and support the workshop team to develop individual competencies and skills
  • Adhering to Health & Safety, Environmental and Quality processes and policies
  • Providing build time estimates and progress updates for Project Managers/Planners
  • Ensuring tools and equipment are in a good and safe condition for use
  • Ensuring the facilities are maintained in a clean and safe condition

What you’ll need

We are looking for someone with the following:

  • 5+ years experience in a similar role building and testing control panels
  • High quality standards and excellent attention to detail
  • Experience mentoring/developing junior staff
  • Experience working with small bore pipework and compression fittings desirable
