AMS Nuclear Engineering Ltd was pleased to attend the launch of A New Nuclear Future at the House of Commons on 23 June, joining parliamentarians, policymakers, industry leaders, educators and supply chain representatives to discuss the future of nuclear energy in the South West and across the UK.

Hosted by Richard Foord MP, Chair of the South West All-Party Parliamentary Group (APPG), and organised by the Great South West, the reception celebrated the region’s unique contribution to the UK’s nuclear sector and highlighted the critical role it will play in supporting future energy security, economic growth and decarbonisation ambitions.

The event brought together representatives from government, industry bodies, academia, local authorities, major project organisations and businesses from across the nuclear supply chain. Discussions centred on A New Nuclear Future, a new prospectus published by the Great South West Partnership which sets out the region’s case for future nuclear investment and highlights how the South West can help deliver the UK’s long-term energy security, clean power and economic growth ambitions.

Speakers and panellists highlighted the region’s exceptional nuclear capability, from major programmes such as Hinkley Point C and HMNB Devonport through to its extensive supply chain, world-class universities, research institutions and highly skilled workforce. The South West is home to the UK’s highest concentration of nuclear-related employment, supporting more than 30,000 jobs across civil and defence nuclear activities.

Keynote presentations included perspectives from government, industry and academia, alongside discussions on the role of regional collaboration in delivering the next generation of nuclear projects. Panel sessions explored how investment in nuclear energy can create long-term economic value, support highly skilled employment and strengthen communities throughout the region.

A clear theme emerged from the event: while the capability exists today, maintaining and growing it requires a sustained pipeline of projects that provides confidence for businesses to invest in people, facilities and innovation.

The South West has developed an exceptional nuclear supply chain through projects such as Hinkley Point C. Businesses across the region have invested heavily in people, processes and capability, creating expertise that is now recognised across the industry.

What we need as a country is a sustained pipeline of nuclear projects that gives companies the confidence to continue investing for the future. By maintaining the skilled workforce and supply chain capability that has been built over the last decade, we can carry forward the lessons learned, improve efficiency, reduce costs and accelerate the delivery of future projects.

The skills, experience and supply chain are already here. The opportunity now is to ensure they are retained and developed so they can continue delivering value for the UK for decades to come.

Ben Mellick, Managing Director at AMS Nuclear

The launch comes at an important time for the UK nuclear sector as government seeks to expand nuclear generation capacity, support advanced reactor technologies and strengthen the country’s long-term energy resilience. The Great South West’s publication makes the case that the region should be at the forefront of future nuclear investment, building on proven delivery through projects such as Hinkley Point C and leveraging an established ecosystem of skills, supply chain capability, research excellence and operational nuclear expertise.

AMS Nuclear welcomes the publication’s recognition of the importance of the regional supply chain and looks forward to continuing its contribution to the delivery of safe, reliable and innovative nuclear projects across the UK.
