Project Overview

Client: EDF Energy - Heysham 1 & Hartlepool

Market Sector: Generating

As reactors move from generation into defueling, test and calibration equipment built for the original operating regime often no longer fits the job. Pressure test equipment for reactor safety relief valves is a clear example, where set pressures fall and legacy instrumentation reaches obsolescence. AMS Nuclear designs bespoke, fully compliant replacements that carry testing capability across that transition, with modern digital instrumentation and full traceability.

At EDF’s Heysham 1 and Hartlepool stations, portable POP test trolleys used to set and verify RPV safety relief valves at up to 45 bar g needed to support de-rated defueling pressures of around 15 bar g. AMS Nuclear delivered a bespoke dual-range trolley covering both settings, with 4-20 mA pressure transducers, precision indicators and paperless data recording, compliant with PSSR 2000, BS EN 61010-1 and ISO 9001:2015, and delivered under QA Grade 2.

The Challenge. Maintaining Operational Confidence During System Obsolescence.
