AMS Celebrates Project Win at Hinkley Point C
AMS Supports BGEN and Arabelle Solutions in Delivering Key Nuclear Energy Infrastructure
AMS Nuclear Engineering Ltd is delighted to announce a significant project win, contributing to the delivery of critical electrical and instrumentation systems at the Hinkley Point C (HPC) nuclear power station in Somerset. This multi-million-pound contract is AMS’ second major engagement on the HPC project, solidifying its role as a key supplier to one of the UK’s most transformative energy initiatives.
Earlier this year, BGEN secured an £84 million contract with Arabelle Solutions to provide electrical and instrumentation packages for the Unit 1 and Unit 2 Turbine Halls at HPC. These turbine halls will house two of the world’s largest Arabelle steam turbines, each capable of generating 1.6 GW of electricity. These turbines are at the core of the plant’s power generation system, ensuring a reliable supply of low-carbon energy to six million homes for decades.
A Collaborative Approach to Innovation
AMS’ scope of work involves the pre-fabrication of instrument frames and canopies, leveraging its expertise in nuclear-grade C&I systems build. What sets this project apart is the proximity of AMS’ facilities to BGEN’s new site, enabling seamless collaboration. AMS will handle the intricate tube bending, fitting, and pressure testing, while BGEN will perform the tube welding. This close working relationship optimises efficiency, reduces logistical challenges, and ensures the highest quality standards are met.
AMS Managing Director Ben Mellick highlighted the importance of this collaboration:
“This project represents not only a milestone for AMS but also a testament to the value of local partnerships. Our proximity to BGEN allows us to work more efficiently, bringing together our unique expertise to deliver on this critical infrastructure. It also underscores the long-term benefits that large-scale projects like HPC can have on SMEs, enabling growth and stability in the local economy.”
The Role of Arabelle and the HPC Project
Arabelle, renowned for its advanced steam turbine technology, plays a pivotal role in HPC. The turbines, engineered for enhanced efficiency and reliability, exemplify the cutting-edge solutions required for such a high-stakes project. With HPC expected to meet 7% of the UK’s electricity demand and reduce carbon emissions by nine million tonnes annually, the project is vital for the nation’s energy security and sustainability goals.
Supporting Local and National Growth
This project reinforces AMS’ commitment to supporting the UK’s nuclear supply chain while fostering local economic growth. HPC has already generated thousands of jobs and revitalised the Somerset region’s industrial capabilities. For AMS, this contract provides visibility of work well into the future, allowing the company to build on its legacy of excellence in nuclear engineering.
A Bright Future for AMS and HPC
As construction progresses at HPC, AMS continues to showcase the importance of collaboration, innovation, and local expertise. By delivering world-class solutions in partnership with BGEN and Arabelle, AMS is helping to pave the way for a cleaner, more sustainable energy future for the UK.
